The Three Heaters: when Chinese medicine reads the human being as a fractal

The 3 Heaters in Chinese medicine

In last month's article, we saw that from the great Whole, the Tao, emanates the number 2. This number 2 is the visible manifestation of the Tao: it appears to us in the form of Yin and Yang.

But 2 gives birth to 3: the Three Heaters. And the Three Heaters offer us a new way of reading the human being.

1. The Three Heaters, the notion that connects

In Western medicine, everything is separate. Nothing is truly linked. For example, if you have a pain in the ankle, you'll get an X-ray of the ankle, then rehabilitation of the ankle.

In Chinese medicine, the question will be different: does this ankle pain perhaps come from the foot, or the knee? Because in Chinese medicine, everything is connected. Everything can be divided by three, and this logic repeats itself at every scale.

2. The Three Heaters, at the scale of the trunk

The thorax and the abdomen can already be divided into three zones, which house our organs:

  • Shang Jiao: the upper heater (heart, lungs, heart protector)
  • Zhong Jiao: the middle heater (spleen, stomach, gall bladder)
  • Xia Jiao: the lower heater (kidneys, bladder, intestines)

Each has its role. Thus, during an imbalance, one can more easily identify the meridian in deficiency or in excess. A pain in the rib cage? We first look at the upper heater, and the meridians linked to it.

Each heater has its function:

  • The upper heater assimilates: difficult information, for example. That's why sometimes, we lose our appetite. The upper heater is also welcome: we welcome with the heart.
  • The middle heater digests. The information, once assimilated, arrives at the middle heater and is digested there. When it's blocked, we feel a lump in the stomach, the belly swelling.
  • The lower heater eliminates. Once the information has been digested, it has to be expelled from us, through the stool. When it's blocked, one can be constipated.

Everything is connected: if one is blocked, nothing works correctly anymore.

3. The same pattern in the face

Illustration of the 3 Heaters in Chinese medicine: heaven, man, earth on the human face
The 3 Heaters reflected in the face
  • The top of the face (forehead, eyes) = the "heaven", the mind, the Shen
  • The middle of the face (nose, cheeks) = transformation, the link with the outside
  • The bottom of the face (mouth, chin) = anchoring, nutrition, the Earth

One literally finds the same Heaven / Man / Earth logic.

4. The same pattern in the pulse

In one of my Instagram and Facebook posts, I was telling you about what I can observe during the pulse reading.

The three positions of the pulse (Cun, Guan, Chi) also correspond to Upper / Middle / Lower: upper heater, middle heater, lower heater. Each position reflects an energetic organ linked to a specific heater.

5. The same pattern in the breathing

  • High inhale (thorax, shoulders) → nourishes the Shang Jiao
  • Middle breathing (ribs) → nourishes the Zhong Jiao
  • Deep abdominal breathing → nourishes the Xia Jiao

I told you about it in a reel from the month of July, showing you how to practice.

6. Why this fractal vision changes the practice

One never treats an isolated point: one treats a logic that repeats itself throughout the body.

Chinese medicine works on the pattern, the root cause, not just the visible symptom.

Conclusion

Each part of us is divisible by three, to infinity. This logic makes it possible to connect areas of the body that seem, at first glance, to have nothing to do with each other.

That's why, to treat a migraine, I sometimes work on the foot. And for a heel pain, on the hand.

During an energy assessment at the practice in Courbevoie, the pulse, the face and the breathing tell the same pattern. A treatment to address the deep logic, not just the symptom.
